.....about the AGM last week, our upcoming meetings, meet Steve Tubman our new Board Director, the BECBC response to the UK Energy Security Strategy issued last week and member feature with Rhodar.
BECBC AGM held 6th April at Energus
Last week's AGM saw the end of an era as Ivan Baldwin from Bechtel stepped down as chair after 61/2 years. He was presented with a gift from BECBC by our new chair Lee Grears from Responsive. The AGM also saw Martin Chown reflect on the five top things he's learned since taking over as CEO at Sellafield Ltd , his priorities for the organisation moving forward and how supply chain companies can be involved.
We welcomed our new Board Director, Steve Tubman (find out more about him further on) and re-elected Peter Fleming and Tom Scaife to the board. Andrew Clitheroe, our Finance Director, presented the accounts to the attendees and recommended what he described as a "clean set of accounts" for approval.
BECBC Awards: Rising Star Shortlist
On Wednesday we also had Ian Linder from KBR, our Rising Star sponsors, to announce the shortlist for the category following the membership vote over recent weeks. We're delighted that Robin Spurr from Cavendish, Mary Ballard from Circular1 Health and Louise McKenna from Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners are all going forward to the Awards Dinner on 26th May where we'll find out who the winner is!
The theme for April’s Social Value meeting is Mental Health; the statistics remain a cause for concern, approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year and In England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week. Mental Health Awareness Week will take place on 9-15th May but in advance of this, we will be joined by local organisations who tell us what is happening in our community. Join us on Tuesday 19th April to hear from Ewanrigg Local Trust and We Will – Ann-Marie Steel, Rachel Suddart and Kate Whitmarsh West Cumbria Mental Health Partnership - Tasmin Beatty Better Bodies – Claire McQueen
At last week's AGM Steve Tubman's election to the board was confirmed. Steve was involved in the very start of BECBC when it was West Cumbria Business Cluster back in 2003. Steve is a born and bred West Cumbrian. He’s a Quantity Surveyor and has worked in the Nuclear industry for most of his working life, covering most UK sites. He’s currently the Commercial Manager for O’Connor Fencing Limited and has been for 11 years, having previously worked for companies such as Rolls Royce, Day and Zimmerman, Redhall. He’s very passionate about the local community and believes we should all work together to create a sustainable environment for future generations both financially and environmentally.
Professional Services Group Meeting 28th April Cockermouth area
Aprils Professional Services Group (formerly BSG) meeting will be an opportunity for our members to hear, explore, discuss and work together on how we can fill the many job vacancies and particularly attract talent to our businesses across the region.
The recruiting talent session will be split into two parts.
Open discussion with insight and input from members currently involved in recruitment, sharing what the current employment market best practice and learnings are, when it comes to attracting candidates to those roles that businesses are challenged to fill.
The 2nd half of the meeting we will split into small working groups to discuss what we, the Professional Services Group (PSG), could do as a sub cluster to support the wider BECBC members. Some ideas may be around developing and sharing information on “Recruitment Tips and FAQ sheets”, “How to raise your brand as an employer to attract talent”, “Talent Attraction Strategy templates” “Career Management frameworks and so on….
Should you wish to be involved and share any recruitment experience and examples of best practice on the day, please contact Peter Fleming. peterfleming@pfbusinessconsultancy.co.uk
