UK Government introduces Clean Industry Bonus to boost offshore wind investments
The UK Government has introduced the Clean Industry Bonus (CIB), a new initiative to encourage offshore wind developers to invest in key industrial regions, coastal communities, and oil and gas hubs. Announced at COP by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the initiative aims to strengthen Britain’s clean energy leadership while driving economic growth.
The CIB will provide £27 million per gigawatt of offshore wind projects, with potential funding of up to £200 million for projects totalling between 7-8 GW. This bonus is designed to accelerate the clean energy transition and reward firms for investing in sustainable, local suppliers in industrial communities across Scotland, Wales, and Northern England.
In alignment with the recent Industrial Growth Plan (IGP), the Clean Industry Bonus will reinforce local supply chains by supporting the production of essential offshore wind components, such as blades, cables, and port infrastructure.
Anil Sayhan, Programme Director for OWGP, welcomed this announcement, saying:
“We’re pleased to see the Clean Industry Bonus recognise the vital contributions that clean energy industries make to our local economies.”
“Many developers in the UK have already built strong partnerships with UK-based supply chain companies, and this initiative will help accelerate the scale and resilience of suppliers supporting offshore wind across the country,” he continued.
“The Clean Industry Bonus sends the right signals to the industry, encouraging a faster transition of supply chains toward sustainable practices as we strive to reach net zero emissions,” he added.
Together, the IGP and CIB will form a powerful framework to stimulate sustainable supply chain growth, positioning the UK for long-term success in the global offshore wind market.
OWGP will continue to work closely with developers, supply chain companies, and other stakeholders to support growth opportunities in the CIB and IGP to enhance the UK’s clean energy infrastructure.
