The Sunday Times reports that Bill Gates is leading TerraPower LLC a US nuclear developer, into a government competition to build small modular reactors (SMRs) in the UK.

TerraPower is developing an advanced modular reactor called Natrium that can adjust its output to meet energy demands on the grid.

The ability to adjust output sets it apart from traditional nuclear reactors and could help balance the grid when output from wind and solar energy drops.

The competition will also feature SMR designs from Rolls-Royce SMR, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Bechtel Corporation and the winning designs will be announced in the autumn.

The government is expected to select two or three models to build up the UK's expertise in new nuclear.
