Strengthening Morgan Sindall Infastructures Presence in the Overhead Line Sector
National Grid has awarded Morgan Sindall Infrastructure the Necton overhead line (OHL) contract, located in the Breckland district of mid-Norfolk. This project is part of a programme of works for National Grid to provide connection to three offshore wind farms and power stations to towns and cities to meet soaring demand for electricity. The initiative will lead to a 3.96 GW increase in generating capacity.
The significance of the Necton project extends beyond its immediate scope, aligning with the broader National Grid and UK strategy to transition towards a net-zero transmission network. With Necton Vattenfall expanding the wind farm array off the coast of Norfolk, upgrading the Necton Substation is imperative to accommodate the increased capacity. Our role in diverting existing overhead infrastructure and installing new towers will facilitate this expansion, reinforcing our contribution to the region's sustainable energy future.
While we primarily rely on established and proven methods, this project offers an excellent opportunity to test and refine our growing arsenal of plant and equipment. Additionally, it provides a platform for collaboration with the substation contractor, emphasising our commitment to innovation and operational efficiency.
Working closely with National Grid our team has demonstrated their dedication to understanding and fulfilling project requirements collaboratively. Furthermore, Morgan Sindall Engineering Solutions has provided invaluable support during the bid phase and will continue to play a pivotal role in design management and temporary works support during project delivery.
We take great pride in embarking on this project with our long-standing client National Grid, solidifying Morgan Sindall Infrastructure's position as a trusted partner in advancing sustainable energy infrastructure.
Peter Kirk, Managing Director - Energy and Water, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, said, “I am delighted that Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been awarded this contract with National Grid, which reflects our strong partnership.
“This is evidence of the confidence that National Grid has in our work and our long-term commitment to the UK.’s vision for a net zero energy system by 2050. The Necton project is a key component in National Grid’s strategy to develop the U.K.’s electrical infrastructure, so it is ready for the energy transition. We are extremely proud to be playing our part in that mission.”
