Amentum Employees Support Action Tutoring at St Begh's School, Whitehaven
Amentum, a leading global provider of technical and engineering services, has partnered with Action Tutoring to support students at St Begh’s Catholic Junior School in Whitehaven. The initiative aims to improve educational outcomes for local children, focusing on closing the attainment gap through high-quality, volunteer-led tutoring.
Action Tutoring is a national education charity dedicated to providing free tutoring to disadvantaged young people, helping them improve their grades in the crucial subjects of English and maths. The partnership with Amentum brings skilled professionals from various sectors into schools, where they volunteer their time and expertise to tutor students at a time they need it most.
Amentum employees in Whitehaven have started tutoring sessions at St Begh’s, providing one-on-one and small-group support to students. This collaboration is designed to prepare students for their exams, boost their academic confidence, and improve future opportunities.
A group of Year 6 pupils are participating in Action Tutoring this year, some of whom benefitted from taking part last year too. Class teacher, Catherine Jones has noticed that there are fewer gaps in essential maths skills amongst her pupils this year. The children report that their confidence is growing, they feel more secure with times tables and number knowledge and find the tutors supportive and patient. One pupil, Luna said, "The tutors help when you're stuck and run through it carefully." It has been a very positive experience all round.
Luke Richardson,
Head of Social Impact at Amentum, spoke on why the company decided to support
this initiative:
“Education is a powerful tool for change, and we believe that every child
should have access to the support they need to achieve their full potential.
Partnering with Action Tutoring aligns perfectly with our values at Amentum, as
we are committed to making a positive and lasting impact in the communities we
operate in. Our employees are passionate about giving back, and this initiative
allows us to contribute directly to the future of local young people.”
Amentum's involvement reflects the company's commitment to making a positive social impact within the communities where its employees live and work.
Action Tutoring’s programmes are designed to support pupils who may not have access to additional academic resources, and the volunteers are carefully trained to ensure they can deliver impactful tutoring sessions. The charity has a proven track record of improving pupils’ academic performance, and this partnership is an extension of its ongoing work to expand educational support across the UK.
